Raising Healthy, Happy Kids #4

Lest you all think that because I’m a grandmother, I don’t understand what raising kids is about today, I want to tell you what it’s really all about.  Raising healthy happy kids is about and end result of them becoming healthy, happy adults.  The best way for me to emphasize this is to share with you the words my son, Jeremy, wrote inside my Mothers day card.  (Halmark should hire him!)  Here goes:

Mom,

Thanks for kissing boo boos and wiping away tears.

Thanks for loving us, no matter what.

Thanks for daring to be my mom when you could have walked away and finished high school like the other “normal” girls.

Thanks for buying me s

Sweet Pickles and Disney story books, because reading has saved my life more than once and made it worth living.

Thanks for encouraging my empathy and love for all living things, because that has saved my soul more than once.

Thank you for my life.

Love you forever,

Jeremy

THAT, my friends is what raising happy, healthy kids is all about! ~Dr. Vicky

P.S.  Thanks for teaching me about women and love, for without Wendy to remind me to buy and send your card, I would have probably forgotten to send it.  I would have still felt this way, but you might not know.  Wendy sends her love, too.

Raising Healthy kids #3 – Who’s driving the bus?

Like I mentioned in an earlier post,”Who’s driving the bus?” Is a question from school that refers to who’s controlling your mind.  I’ve noticed that often when parents want help with a child, the problem is in who is the “driver”.  We’ve all know “them”.  The family who is controlled by the whims of a child.  I saw this in the mall yesterday.  Mom and Dad are ready to go home, and a child of about 6 screamed, “No, I don’t wanna go home!”  and started a perfect temper tantrum.  Mom’ s response?  “Ok, honey, let’s get some ice cream first.”  Dad looked horrified, and said, simply and firmly “No way!” picked up child and walked out of the mall – with Mom starting her own temper tantrum on the way out.  Dad…good job!  Mom, you deserve what you get.  A child who runs your life.  Nuff said! ~ Dr. Vicky

Raising Healthy, Happy kids #2

The theme I’ve been hearing this week is this: Children are little mirror images for their parents (who are mirror images of their parents!)  What behavior are you seeing in your child that you dislike?  Take a good look in the mirror.  What part of you exhibits that SAME behavior?  When you (the parent, friend, spouse or any other relationship you have) heal or correct that behavior in yourself, it will magically be healed and corrected in others.  Imagine, the mom who is complaining about her anger and sadness towards her husband.  She is also confused by the anger and sadness her child has been “acting out.”  “Well, hmmmm,”  I say to her, “where does this child live?”

“With us, of course.”  she replies, looking at me like I have asked a ridiculous question.

“Oh, then where do you think she learned this behavior?”  I say, (with lots of emphasis on the word “learned.”

“Oh.  From me?”  asks Mom, now looking shocked.

So, don’t you think the first step in raising healthy, happy children is to be a healthy and happy parent? -Dr. Vicky
