The cost of not…paying attention to your body.

Well, the response to “The cost of not” is “overwhelming”. (Since that is the theme I wanted to discuss today I just HAD to throw in that word.)  People are commenting on their own personal “Cost of Not” every where I go.  Overwhelm is one of the themes I’ve been hearing this week.  Many clients are suffering from a sense of stress based on over commitment.  I know my inherent response to “overwhelm” is to seclude myself.  Living in a helpy-helper world takes it’s toll.  As a healer, I must be on call for family, friends, clients, business associates, pets, and strangers!  So the cost of NOT paying attention causes me to feel exhausted, and cranky.  But I know how to remedy that.  I hide.  I turn off the phone (especially the work phone after business hours and on weekends.)  I ignore family and friends.  I get plenty of rest.  I re-evaluate my personal goals and pay attention to factors like what I eat, drink, and getting some physical activity.  I strive for balance in work, family, friends and ME.  The cost of NOT…is extremely deteriorating!  Find out more about the cost of NOT on Monday at 11:00 AM PST on Newstalk 1380.  (or catch the blog post! -Dr. Vicky

The cost of not listening to your body’s messages

A patient of mine works at a local health food store and runs the nutrition section of same. She is extremely knowledgeable about health, and a great source of information for our community. We were talking yesterday about bowel function – I know, it’s such a sexy topic 😉 – and I taught her something new; that if a patient suffers from chronic constipation, they likely have mis-alignments (known in chiropractic as subluxations) in the lower back. When I showed her how the nerves from the low back go to the digestive system, she said “Wow, that makes so much sense.”

Her point, and this was the take away for me, was that many people suffer from GI problems and have been since they were kids. They’re looking for any solution, spending a TON of money, and no one has bothered to tell them that if the nerves to the gut don’t communicate properly, the gut doesn’t work properly.

Where is the sense in a chemical solution to a structural problem?

If you listen to your body, it tells you what it needs. Thirsty? You need water. Hungry? You need nutrition, from real food. Does your body function perfectly? If not, you need to be checked for subluxations by the only health care professional who handles them, a chiropractor. Are you stressed and running on fight or flight all the time? You need someone who can help you deal with your responses, like a clinical hypnotherapist. Tired? You need sleep, not caffeine.

If you don’t listen to those messages, your body will continue to run, it’s a remarkable machine. But you will be damaging it, and the price you’ll pay to recover from it may be more than you are willing to spend in terms of time off from work and lost money. I say that because I had a consultation with a woman yesterday who has been looking for answers to her pain for over A YEAR. And guess what? It’s so bad now, after a year, that she’s on disability for 6 weeks. That’s a pretty hefty price to pay, don’t you think?

Listen to your body. Take care of it. It’s the best investment you can make.

The cost of not…..

So next week’s show, is titled “The Cost of Not…”  What exactly does that mean??? Well, it’s about the cost of NOT eating right, the cost of NOT becoming a non smoker, the cost of NOT taking care of your body!  OUCH.  Incidently, today, my cost of NOT is NOT balancing my schedule!  I worked 12 hours on Monday (really!  two of those were after I got home at 8:30 Pm)  Then another 13 hours on Tuesday not getting home till about 10 PM.  So today I had this lovely day off scheduled.  With only a meeting at noon.  Great right!  My cost of NOT caught up with me when my dog woke up with an outrageous ear ache.  Checked her in at the vet where they are doing stuff serious enough for sedation.  My cost of NOT…a tired, cranky me.  (And I had to miss the meeting at noon!)

So tell us your cost of not…not whiny posts, please…but how has NOT taking care of yourself caused  you problems, and what are you doing about it?

Remember, if you don’t take care of your body, where are you going to live?
